Unfortunately, the internet is getting costly if you want to retain your
privacy and protect your personal information. With new technology,
hackers, spammers, and other malicious individuals and corporations are
also getting smarter and new threats surface online every day. The
days of "safe internet surfing" are long gone. Until
someone steps up, whether the government or another organization, to start
protecting internet surfers from all the privacy and identity threats, you
are the only one able to protect yourself.
Before you buy
and/or download a firewall, make sure that you know exactly what you are
getting. Uninstalling
firewalls will most likely leave files behind that you won't be able to delete
unless you're very technology oriented and can safely mess around in your
folders and registry to get rid of all files. If you don't know how to
uninstall programs and delete all files, Uninstaller
PRO 2004 can help you get rid of all unwanted stuff in your computer. They
have a free trial, take advantage of it! If you're not sure what a
file is or what it does, keep it. Then ask someone about it, do a
search on the file, try to figure out if it should be removed or
not. I use Uninstaller Pro and I do recommend it.
If your computer already
comes with a pre-installed firewall, or your ISP has its own firewall,
make sure you know exactly what type of protection it gives you. The
majority of ISP or Windows firewalls only protect from incoming traffic
(hackers getting IN your computer), it doesn't protect your information from
going out or spyware from being installed. If you were to be infected with a keylogger (a program
that records your keystrokes) or other spyware, your information would not
be protected. You
may need additional protection, or you may already be very well
protected. Only YOU know. That's why using spyware BLOCKER such as Regblock
(highly recommended) is a good idea. See
below for more details.
There are many firewalls on
the market. They all come at various but similar prices, and most offer the same type of
protection for your computer. The highest price doesn't mean you're
getting the best protection no more than the lowest price means that
you're not getting much. It doesn't really matter which one you
choose, but pick one and run it every minute you're online. There
is such a thing as too much protection. You should really have only
one firewall (one software and one hardware is OK, but not two software or
two hardware) and one antivirus program loaded in your computer.
These program files can start interfering with one another and give you
more problems than you bargained for. If you already have a firewall
or antivirus program but
want to switch to another program, make sure you uninstall the first one
COMPLETELY before installing the second one. Again, if you don't
know how, Uninstaller
PRO 2004 can help you do that. Norton is notorious for leaving
a bunch of files behind.
One last word of advice... When shopping for a firewall or antivirus
program, or any type of security product, make sure you are buying the
LATEST version of the program. Do not waste your money on discounted
products that are out-of-date. You will be buying a bunch of problems and
programs that don't work and that won't be able to recognize new threats
and viruses. With the exception of one firewall, older versions of firewalls have ALL
failed Steve Gibson's leak test, including Norton! Only one firewall
has passed all of Steve Gibson's tests with flying colors every time for
years, Zone Alarm.

Also see why we deleted all references to McAfee products! If you're
using McAfee security software on your computer, you REALLY don't know who is
collecting your personal information and how they're using it. This
one was a shocker!

XCleaner myself and it's a wonderful program. And it WORKS!
THE reasons that I strongly recommend these two programs are pretty

1. they BLOCK common spyware from being downloaded and installed in
your computer without your knowledge. Removing spyware doesn't PROTECT you

is absolutely NOTHING POSITIVE to say about Norton/Symantec. Norton is not
user friendly, it is notorious for messing up your computer, slowing it
down to snail pace,
and interfering with other files and making your computer act up for no

Their free online firewall scan gives
you false information as to your open ports (so you'll buy Norton on the
spot) and their free virus scan didn't
catch a virus we had saved in a file (not activated) for this
purpose. Trend Micro's free Housecall online scan caught it, so did
the free version of AVG. It's really all about ethics, and
Norton/Symantec has NONE! Do they really need to fool people to sell
their software?? Doesn't that make you a little suspicious?
Earlier versions of Norton firewall have the block connection option set
on "automatic". What they didn't tell you anywhere, and
with good reasons!, is with this option ON, your computer LEAKS YOUR
PERSONAL INFORMATION and any program can access the internet without your
knowledge! If you have an earlier version of Norton and your
settings are set on automatic, take the Steve Gibson's leak test and see
what we mean. We tested it, and it leaked EVERY TIME when the
automatic setting was on. Even after unchecking the automatic
option, it still leaked on occasions. Good work Norton!
New Norton software is totally paranoid! The ad blocking
feature is ON by default. This would be good if it only blocked
annoying ads, no doubt about that. But it also blocks all kinds of
links that Norton deems to be advertising, company logos, graphics
and other pictures. If you're looking at a newspaper page or a
shopping website and there are a lot of blank spots all over the place or
links that should be links but are not clickable, Norton is the
culprit! You don't see pages the way you should. Norton made
sure of that.
All in all, Norton is more expensive than other firewalls, is less
reliable, fools people into believing they are fully protected, decides
what you see and what you don't for you, has default options that make
their software a real pain to use and surf the net. For a brand
new user, Norton is a nightmare!
If Norton has made any changes to its software recently, I am unaware of
it. Maybe after so many people complain Norton will get the picture,
pun intended!
